Skyscreen III Orange Diffuser

Evens out skylight into the sensor; the wear part that decides how a Skyscreen III performs in poor light.

The orange diffuser looks like a piece of plastic, but it sets the conditions under which a Skyscreen III still triggers reliably. It spreads skylight evenly into the sensor: the translucent blaze-orange material raises sensitivity in overcast, early and late light, and the wide roof shields the lens from midday glare. Too little light and too much direct sun are the two failure modes of a skylight sensor; the diffuser handles both. Three interlocking parts, no metal, no glue: it packs flat, travels well and never loosens as an adhesive ages. A normal wear item; keep spares for range work. Fits every Skyscreen III body.

Overview

A skylight sensor is only as good as its background light. Too dark, and a passing bullet's shadow does not change the signal enough to trigger. Too bright and directional, and direct sun saturates the detector. The orange diffuser is built for both ends: the translucent orange material evens out scattered light and raises contrast, so overcast days, dawn and dusk stay usable, while the integrated roof blocks midday glare. With no metal and no adhesive, it packs flat, survives transport and will not come loose as glue degrades in heat and humidity. Sun, dust and knocks wear it down, so it is a consumable. When sensitivity drops, check the diffuser first.

Mounts on top of the Skyscreen III body

Diffuser and roof form the sensor's light path; seat it fully when replacing, since position and angle affect sensitivity.

Case and lens spares

If sensitivity drops and the diffuser is not the cause, check the case and lens for damage as well.
