601ES

Weatherized safety digital multimeter for measuring stray voltage and current safely in harsh outdoor conditions

601ES is the AMPTEC Research intrinsically safe digital multimeter for stray voltage and current measurements in bad weather and explosive atmospheres. A waterproof housing, an all-metal Faraday cage and conformal-coated circuitry keep the reading honest when the environment is not. NASA and the USAF safety boards have approved it, which is why defense, ordnance and aerospace field crews reach for it first.

Overview

601ES is a weatherized safety digital multimeter for measuring stray voltage and current where it rains, where it is damp, and where fuel vapor is present. The waterproof case withstands rain and short immersion, every internal circuit is conformal coated, and an all-metal Faraday cage screens out external electromagnetic interference. A 4 1/2 digit LED display and 4-wire Kelvin terminals deliver accurate voltage, current and resistance readings, while a fail-safe current limit protects the device under test. 601ES is compliant with Mil Std 810-511 for explosive atmospheres, UL-913 certified and built under ISO 9001:2015, and it holds NASA and USAF approval for use on non-nuclear munitions and in aerospace and defense field work. Before ordering, pick the lead set that matches your test points and decide whether you need the isolated analog output option.

Features

Intrinsically safe and fail-safe

Compliant with Mil Std 810-511 for explosive atmospheres and UL-913 certified for use in fuel-vapor hazardous areas. The fail-safe current limit of 8 mA keeps the device under test from firing accidentally.

Weatherized waterproof housing

The waterproof case takes rain and brief immersion, suited to outdoor measurements in rough weather.

All-metal Faraday cage

A built-in all-metal Faraday cage and conformal-coated circuitry block external electromagnetic interference, so results stay complete and reliable.

4-wire Kelvin accuracy

4-wire Kelvin terminals remove lead resistance, giving accurate voltage, current and low-resistance readings from 2 Ω upward.

4 1/2 digit LED display and built-in self-test

A clear 4 1/2 digit LED display with a built-in self-test that confirms measurement integrity before every use.

NASA and USAF approved

Approved by the NASA/WFF safety office and the USAF Space Wing, and suitable for safety measurements on all non-nuclear munitions.

Typical applications

601ES stray voltage check on electro-explosive devices before a rocket launch

Range safety

Stray voltage on electro-explosive devices before launch

At launch sites such as NASA Wallops Flight Facility (WFF), safety engineers use 601ES to measure stray voltage and current on electro-explosive device (EED) circuits before arming, confirming they stay below the firing threshold. The 8 mA fail-safe current limit and internal Faraday cage keep the meter from becoming an ignition source, as the WFF Range Safety Manual requires.

Pyrotechnics test

Igniter bridge wire continuity in explosive atmospheres

Technicians at ordnance plants, aerospace contractors and rocket propulsion labs measure igniter bridge wire resistance (2Ω to 20kΩ) where flammable gas or dust is present. 601ES carries UL-913 intrinsic safety and Mil-Std-810-511 explosive atmosphere compliance, so a precise 4-wire Kelvin resistance reading is taken without igniting the surrounding atmosphere. The USAF Space Wing (AFSPC) has approved it for this use.

Outdoor field maintenance

Flight line and launch pad checks in bad weather

On open launch pads, aircraft ramps and offshore platforms with high humidity and low temperature, ground crews rely on the 601ES weatherized housing and conformal-coated circuitry to measure voltage (2V to 600V AC/DC) and current (2A AC/DC) on ground support equipment. It holds ±0.5% accuracy from 0°C to 50°C with no extra protection.
