Oehler Skyscreen III
A passive screen lit by scattered skylight, shipped with Oehler chronographs since 1984 and the industry's standard sensor for outdoor velocity work.
Skyscreen III needs no light source of its own. It uses scattered skylight as the background and triggers when the projectile shadows the lens, so an outdoor range does not need power or lamps at the sensors. The body is polycarbonate and stands up to .50 BMG muzzle blast. It mounts with a single 1/4"-20 screw, no tools, and does not snap off easily; compared with the four-screw designs of other makers, the difference in swap time on the range is obvious. The blaze orange translucent diffuser raises trigger sensitivity noticeably on overcast days and at dawn and dusk, while the roof cuts glare from direct midday sun. Improved cable shielding sharply reduces false triggers from static and electrical noise. Suitable for archery, airguns, handguns, shotguns and rifles.
Overview
Skyscreen III is the sky-lit screen sensor Oehler has shipped with its chronographs since 1984. The design trade-off is plain: it gives up an active light source for easy outdoor setup, at the cost of needing usable skylight, so indoor or night work should switch to Model 57 infrared screens. The polycarbonate body tolerates .50 BMG muzzle blast; a single 1/4"-20 screw holds it, installs without tools, and resists breaking when knocked on the range. The orange diffuser is three interlocking parts with no metal and no adhesive, so it packs flat and survives transport; its job is to even out the scattered skylight entering the screen, which raises sensitivity in low light, and its roof suppresses midday glare. For setup, the Model 35 ships with a 4 ft rail made from 1/2 in EMT conduit with dimples that fix the correct spacing of the three screens, plus two folding stands. It evens out scattered skylight before it reaches the screen, which raises trigger sensitivity on overcast days and at dawn and dusk. It is a normal wear item, so keep spares.

A damaged body can be replaced on its own, with or without the lens; the replacement keeps the factory optical geometry, so accuracy is unchanged.
