Oehler System 84
A shotshell-only chamber pressure and velocity system that uses velocity coils to solve the problem of measuring a shot cloud that no photoelectric screen can time.
The basic difficulty in shotshell testing is that the gun fires a cloud of pellets, not a single bullet. A photoelectric screen triggers on whichever pellet arrives first, and that number has no physical meaning. System 84 uses velocity coils instead: the whole signal from the cloud passing through a coil is digitized into a density curve, the center of mass is located at each measurement point, and the velocity computed from it represents the entire charge. It succeeds the Model 71 and replaces that model's manual tuning with automatic tuning. It works with lead and steel shot but not with tungsten-matrix shot or pellets bound in an insulating buffer. Oehler restricts the international export of this system, and supply is assessed case by case.
Overview
System 84 exists for shotshell testing and, in the factory's own words, for nothing else. Velocity coils take the place of photoelectric screens. As the shot cloud passes through a coil, the coil signal is digitized into a density curve and the software locates the cloud's center of mass on it. The center-of-mass displacement and time difference between two coils give a shot velocity that is physically meaningful and repeatable. The pressure curve and the coil response are displayed together with trigger points marked, so a bad measurement is easy to spot. Earlier equipment needed manual tuning; System 84 tunes itself. The oscillator is a separate module connected over RG-58 coax. The interface is RS-232, the operating system is Windows 2000 Pro or Windows XP Pro, and data is written in a dBase-compatible format with support for networked multi-station work. Mind the material limit: lead and steel shot are fine, tungsten-matrix shot and pellets embedded in an insulating binder are not.
