Oehler System 85

One system covers interior ballistics (chamber pressure) and exterior ballistics (velocity, time of flight, ballistic coefficient).

System 85 is the workhorse of ammunition-industry ballistic laboratories. Two 12-bit ADCs sample two pressure signals together at 5 or 10 microsecond intervals and keep 400 points per channel, enough to rebuild the full pressure-time curve and compute peak pressure, time to peak, rise time and area under the curve automatically. The same shot also yields muzzle velocity, impact position and time of flight, from which the ballistic coefficient follows. A built-in firing simulator lets you configure the system and train staff without live ammunition. Data exports to Excel on its own and goes straight into existing statistics and QC workflows. Oehler restricts the international export of this system, and supply is assessed case by case.

Overview

A ballistic lab usually needs two separate instruments to cover chamber pressure and velocity, then has to match the two data sets afterwards. System 85 puts both on the same shot and the same report. Pressure channel A reads mid-case or case-mouth pressure; channel B reads mid-case, case-mouth or barrel pressure. Both are sampled together at 12-bit resolution, at 5 or 10 microsecond intervals, 400 points per channel. At the same time, muzzle screens and a distant target give velocity, time of flight and ballistic coefficient. Peak pressure, time to peak, rise time and area under the curve are computed by the system, with no manual curve reading. Optional Bessel and Butterworth low-pass filters suppress measurement noise. The unit connects to a Windows computer through a powered USB port, can also measure machine-gun rate of fire, and exports test data to Excel automatically for statistics and QC traceability. The built-in firing simulator runs on its own battery, so configuration and operator training happen without a live shot.
