Oehler System 88

A GPS-synchronized radio network of 2 to 4 stations that measures muzzle velocity, multi-point time of flight and impact coordinates across several kilometers.

System 88 is Oehler's long-range exterior-ballistics system, in field use since 2014. It networks 2 to 4 identical wireless controllers under a shared GPS time base and records muzzle velocity, time of flight at each station and impact coordinates on the same shot, over spans of several kilometers. Timing resolves to the microsecond and target position to the centimeter. Each station runs on a rechargeable 12V gel-cell battery for several days, which suits multi-day range programs. The Extended Range Truing software supplied with it merges many tests into a single corrected trajectory solution. Oehler restricts the international export of this system, and supply is assessed case by case.

Overview

System 88 answers a question a single station cannot. The ballistic coefficient is not constant; it changes as velocity decays, so a correction measured at one distance does not extrapolate to the full trajectory. System 88 places 2 to 4 stations along the flight path. Each is the same wireless controller with Skyscreen III screens and a four-microphone target array, and GPS gives them a common time base, so arrival times at different stations can be subtracted directly. The standard antennas have been tested to 1 mile; with 3 to 4 stations the span reaches several kilometers. The included Extended Range Truing software folds many tests at many distances into one corrected trajectory solution rather than a set of separate correction factors. Units switch between metric and yards, feet and inches to match range reporting conventions. For safety the system allows only one bullet in the air at a time.
