ChipMaster Compact Pro is ABI Electronics' low-cost handheld tester for digital ICs removed from the board. The ZIF socket takes devices up to 40 pins. Insert the part, key in the type number, and the unit runs the functional test on its own. A large built-in device library, an unknown-device search and per-pin diagnostics make it a quick pass/fail tool for repair engineers and electronics labs.
Overview
ChipMaster Compact Pro is built for out-of-circuit functional testing of digital integrated circuits across the TTL, CMOS, VLSI, Interface, Memory and User-defined categories. The device under test sits in a 40-pin ZIF socket, and optional adapters extend package coverage to SOIC and PLCC parts. Operation is simple: insert the part, key in the type number, and the tester runs the complete functional test and reports diagnostic information for individual pins, so the engineer can see which pin has failed. For intermittent faults, a built-in loop mode repeats the test until an unstable device shows itself. When the type number is unknown or unreadable, the search function compares the part against the built-in library to identify it. The unit runs on 4 AA/LR6 batteries for portable use, with an optional mains adapter for long test sessions. Over USB, the optional CompactLink software adds new devices to the library and builds functional tests for special applications.

Handheld out-of-circuit IC test
The 40-pin ZIF socket holds the device under test. Insert the part and key in the type number, and the full functional test runs with the IC off the board.

Unknown device search
When the type number of the IC is uncertain, the search function compares it against the built-in library to identify unknown digital devices.
Loop test for intermittent faults
A conditional loop mode repeats the test continuously, which catches devices that fail only occasionally or are marginal.

Diagnostic information is reported pin by pin, so the engineer can pinpoint the failed pin and speed up repair decisions on digital circuits.
USB link and CompactLink
Over USB, the optional CompactLink software adds devices to the library and builds functional tests for special applications.

Board repair
PCB fault diagnosis and component verification
Before replacing anything, the repair engineer lifts the suspect IC and drops it into the ZIF socket of ChipMaster Compact Pro for an out-of-circuit functional test. The result shows at once whether the device itself has failed or the fault lies in the surrounding circuit, so good parts are not swapped out for nothing.
Intermittent faults
Loop test mode catches occasional failures
For TTL, CMOS or memory ICs that work one minute and fail the next, the engineer switches on loop test mode and keeps the device under stress. Temperature or electrical margins then trigger the latent defect, which cuts the time spent chasing intermittent faults and identifies the part to replace.


Incoming inspection
Screening stock parts and identifying type numbers
When purchasing or MRO stores staff face an IC with a blurred marking or unclear origin, the device search on ChipMaster Compact Pro compares it against the built-in library, confirms the type number and suggests compatible substitutes. That lowers the risk of counterfeit or substandard parts reaching the production line.
