Precise polarization conversion from microwave to mm-wave

The Mi-Wave Series 282 linear-to-circular polarizer converts a linearly polarized signal into right-hand (RHCP) or left-hand (LHCP) circular polarization, from 8 GHz to 220 GHz. It presents a standard rectangular waveguide port, holds axial ratio to 1.0 dB maximum and VSWR to 1.2, and is used in satellite links, radar and mm-wave measurement labs. The engineer picks the band and the circular waveguide ID, then states the polarization sense on the order. Evencat is an authorized Mi-Wave distributor in Taiwan.

Overview

Series 282 is a passive component for microwave and mm-wave systems that takes a linearly polarized input on rectangular waveguide and delivers a circularly polarized output. Twelve standard bands run from X-band (8–12.4 GHz) to G-band (140–220 GHz), covering SatCom, radar, RF links and antenna test. Each band model is offered with several circular waveguide IDs so the part can be tuned to a sub-band, and the polarization sense (RHCP or LHCP) is fixed at the factory to the order. Insertion loss is 1.0 dB through V-band, rising to 1.5 dB in D-band and 1.7 dB in G-band; axial ratio stays within 1.0 dB and VSWR below 1.2, and standard UG flanges let the polarizer bolt into an existing RF chain. For systems that need to change sense in the field, the Series 283 adjustable polarizer adds a manual switch between RHCP, LHCP and linear over the same 8–220 GHz range. When ordering, supply the center frequency (the XX field) and the circular ID (the .XXX field) along with the sense.

Features

Clean linear-to-circular conversion

Series 282 converts the linear input on rectangular waveguide into circular output with an axial ratio no worse than 1.0 dB, so polarization purity is preserved.

8–220 GHz in twelve bands

Switchable sense (Series 283)

The adjustable Series 283 switches between RHCP and LHCP by hand, which gives the system architect flexibility in the link without swapping hardware.

Low loss, well matched

VSWR stays at or below 1.2 and insertion loss at 1.0 dB from X through V band, which protects power efficiency and keeps the system noise figure down.

Satellite communications

Feed polarization on satellite antennas

In the feed chain of a communications satellite or earth-station antenna, the polarizer turns the linear waveguide signal into RHCP or LHCP. The link then tolerates the polarization rotation caused by spacecraft attitude and Faraday rotation, and the gain budget stays stable.

Radar and EW

Suppressing rain clutter with circular polarization

Airborne and ground surveillance radars convert to circular polarization to cut the volume clutter returned by rain and cloud, because the backscatter from near-spherical drops largely cancels for a circularly polarized wave. Target detection in bad weather improves accordingly.
