SYSTEM 8 Multiplexed Matrix Switch (MMS)

16x16 matrix switching and multiplexing in one module, an affordable route to automated low and medium volume functional test

SYSTEM 8 Multiplexed Matrix Switch (MMS) is a 16x16 matrix interface with 256 crosspoints. Any channel can be connected to any other channel, with up to 16 independent signal paths live at the same time. It works as a multiplexer and a de-multiplexer, and once paired with ABI SYSTEM 8 modules and TestFlow Manager software an engineer runs a sequence of tests automatically without writing code or re-plugging leads, which cuts both setup and run time. For labs and lines that do not want the cost of a conventional ATE, PXI or LXI system, it is a cost-effective way into automation.

Overview

SYSTEM 8 Multiplexed Matrix Switch (MMS) uses a 16x16 matrix with 256 crosspoints, connecting any input channel to any output channel while holding up to 16 independent signal paths at once. Beyond matrix switching it serves as a flexible multiplexer or de-multiplexer, with configurations such as 1 to 64, 2 to 32 and 16 to 4 to suit the test at hand. Signals are routed through standard IDC connectors with a bandwidth from DC to 60MHz, and the switch handles up to 100V or 1A at a 10W rating. MMS is built to work with the ABI SYSTEM 8 range of test instruments. Together with TestFlow Manager software it creates and stores interactive test sequences, runs multi-point power-off 3D signature analysis, range scans and DMM readings with logging, and supports AC/DC signal injection with automatic PASS/FAIL judgement. The user is spared repeated lead changes and gets automated functional test of low to medium volume products for far less than conventional automatic test equipment.

Features

16x16 matrix with 256 crosspoints

The 16x16 matrix interface provides 256 crosspoints, connects any channel to any channel and holds up to 16 independent signal paths at once.

Multiplexer and de-multiplexer in one

Runs as a multiplexer or de-multiplexer in configurations such as 1 to 64, 2 to 32 and 16 to 4 to match the signal routing required.

Wideband signal routing

Routes DC to 60MHz signals through standard IDC connectors and handles up to 100V or 1A at a 10W rating.

Automated test without re-plugging

With the SYSTEM 8 range it runs a series of tests in sequence with no lead changes, cutting test setup and execution time.

TestFlow Manager integration

With TestFlow Manager you build and store interactive test sequences, run multi-point signature analysis and range scans, and get automatic PASS/FAIL results without writing code.

Affordable automation

A scalable automated functional test solution for low to medium volume products at a fraction of the cost of conventional ATE, PXI or LXI instruments.

Typical applications

SYSTEM 8 Multiplexed Matrix Switch (MMS) automated multi-point functional verification on a low to medium volume line

Production test

Automated multi-point functional verification on a low to medium volume line

In small-batch or mixed-model production, MMS manages up to 256 crosspoints while technicians build one standard automated procedure in TestFlow Manager. Stimulus is applied to each measurement node on the board in turn and PASS/FAIL is judged automatically, with no repeated probe and lead changes. Changeover time falls, reports come out in CSV/HTML, and costly conventional ATE is not needed.

Repair diagnostics

Multi-point fault location at a repair center with power on or off

When debugging a faulty board, the repair engineer uses MMS to switch to any measurement path with the board powered or unpowered and run 3D signature analysis and logged DMM scans. Suspect nodes are compared one by one for waveform differences without swapping fixtures or moving probes by hand, turning high-value boards from scrap into precise repairs and lifting repair throughput and yield.

Design verification

Multi-channel signal routing and data acquisition in development

For design verification and data acquisition, the 16x16 matrix of MMS routes the inputs and outputs of the SYSTEM 8 measurement modules to up to 64 points on the board. With range scanning and AC/DC injection, each functional block is checked systematically under different operating conditions, and results go into a database to support repeated test cycles on engineering samples.
